Considered by experts to be equal in historical importance with Pompeii, Akrotiri was protected and preserved by a thick layer of volcanic ash after a huge eruption in 1500 BC which literally blew the island in half. Part of the city has been excavated to reveal the streets, paved squares and houses of this ancient civilization.
