Welcome to Spain, home to the architectural wonder of Barcelona and the flamenco-filled streets of Seville!

If you’ve dreamed of spending an afternoon at one of San Sebastián’s famed tapas bars or the beaches of the Balearic Islands, Spain is worth the visit.

But knowing how to pack all that Spain has to offer into one trip can be overwhelming! Where do you stay? When should you go? And which spot has the best paella?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. In this destination guide, we’ll break down the top cities, beaches, and food in Spain to help you plan your perfect anniversary, honeymoon, or just-because-we-can trip!

When is the Best Time to Visit Spain?

Spain’s climate varies by region, so you can find very different experiences depending on where you go and when. Here’s what your Spain trip may look like depending on the time of year you visit:

  • Spring (April–May): Spring brings mild temperatures (59–77°F/15–25°C), which is when the country’s beautiful gardens begin to bloom. Some of Spain’s most spectacular festivals including Semana Santa’s elaborate Easter processions and Seville’s Feria de Abril welcome visitors from across the world during these months.
  • Fall (September–October): Spain’s fall features similar weather to spring, and you can take in the wine harvest season (vendimia) as well as the lesser-known mushroom season. Plus, you’ll notice fewer tourists. If you love food and wine, this might be the best window of all.
  • Summer (June–August): Summer can get very hot in southern and central Spain (90°F+), but it’s the peak season for beach destinations. Expect the biggest crowds and highest prices, especially along the coast and in Barcelona.
  • Winter: You can still enjoy mild temperatures in the south (Andalucía stays pleasant) and the Canary Islands offer year-round warmth. This is a great window for budget travel, and exploring cities without the crowds.

April, May, September, and October consistently deliver the best combination of weather, crowd levels, and value. If you’re planning a beach celebration, late September still offers warm sea temperatures with shoulder-season pricing.

Top Spain Cities to Visit

Barcelona

Best for those who want: jaw-dropping architecture, beach access, and a world-class food scene.

Barcelona is one of Spain’s top destinations, and the city welcomed over 20 million tourists in 2025 alone.

Gaudí’s La Sagrada Família (~€26 admission) is unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and you’ll want to pay a visit to Park Güell, La Rambla, and the Gothic Quarter. The city’s Mediterranean beaches should also have a spot on your itinerary.

Daily budgets in Barcelona typically range from €100–€170. Accommodations run around €50–€95/night and meals €25–€40/day. You may find that Barcelona is one of Spain’s most expensive cities for tourists, but the experience justifies the spend.

Pro tip: Book La Sagrada Família tickets weeks in advance they sell out quickly, and timed entry is the only way in. Early morning slots offer the best light inside the basilica.

Madrid

Best for those who want: world-class art, elegant parks, and Spain’s vibrant capital energy.

The city of Madrid runs at its own rhythm. You’ll join revelers for late dinner in lively plazas, and the city has an art scene that rivals any city in the world.

Top spots to visit include the Prado Museum, Royal Palace, Retiro Park, and Plaza Mayor. Foodies will want to stop by Mercado de San Miguel for gourmet tapas.

Madrid’s average daily spend is actually higher than Barcelona’s at €305/day, partly because visitors tend to stay longer (7+ days on average).

Daily budgets run €85–€150 for most travelers, with accommodation from €45–€85/night and meals €22–€38/day.

Seville

Best for those who want: flamenco, stunning palaces, and the heart of Andalusian culture.

Seville is the “flamenco capital of Spain”, and if you’re visiting, you’ll want to plan around seeing a live performance.

The Real Alcázar’s Moorish gardens, Seville Cathedral and its Giralda tower, the sweeping Plaza de España, and the vibrant Triana neighborhood make this city a dream for couples and culture lovers. Daily budgets are friendlier here at €75–€130.

Granada

Best for those who want: the Alhambra, free tapas, and Moorish charm at a great price.

Granada is home to the Alhambra, one of Spain’s most visited monuments. Tickets are about €14 (general admission) and advance booking is essential as they sell out weeks ahead.

Beyond the Alhambra, you can find hidden treasures around in the Albaicín neighborhood while taking in some incredible views of the Sierra Nevada. It’s also one of Spain’s most affordable cities, with daily budgets ranging from €60–€105.

San Sebastián & Basque Country

Best for those who want: the best food in Spain and a stunning coastal setting.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t include San Sebastián on our list. This region is widely considered the world capital of pintxos (Basque-style tapas) and is home to more Michelin three-star restaurants per capita than almost anywhere on earth (perfect for foodies!)

La Concha beach is often hailed as one of Europe’s most beautiful urban beaches. For birthday celebrations, anniversary trips, or group foodie adventures, a few days of bar-hopping through the Old Town’s pintxos bars is an experience that redefines what tapas can be.

Where are the Best Beaches in Spain?

Spain’s coastline stretches for thousands of miles, so you’re likely to find a beach that fits just about any occasion:

  • Costa Brava (Catalonia): Costa Brava is home to rocky coves and crystal-clear water alongside Spain’s most charming medieval villages. Perfect for couples who want scenery over scene.
  • Costa del Sol (Andalucía): Málaga, Marbella, and warm temperatures year-round make Costa del Sol great for a winter escape or a lively summer beach trip.
  • Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca): You’ll enjoy turquoise waters, beach clubs, and quiet coves. Plus, you’ll have Ibiza, one of the best spots for group celebrations.
  • Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote): Looking for something unique? The Canary Islands offer volcanic landscapes (and, as you’d expect, year-round warmth). These islands are ideal for winter getaways and unique celebration backdrops.
  • Costa Blanca (Valencia region): Family-friendly, affordable, and blessed with over 300 days of sunshine per year.

What to Eat in Spain

Spanish cuisine is one of the great joys of traveling to the area. And if you plan accordingly, you’ll find that it’s remarkably affordable.

Tapas and pintxos at bars run €3–€8 each. The menú del día (three-course lunch special available at most restaurants) is one of Europe’s best dining values. Even a glass of local wine is just €3–€6, and a caña (small beer) €2.50–€4.

Must-try experiences include:

  • Paella in Valencia (where it was invented)
  • Jamón ibérico sliced paper-thin
  • Patatas bravas at a neighborhood bar
  • Churros dipped in thick hot chocolate
  • Gazpacho on a warm afternoon
  • Pintxos bar-hopping in San Sebastián

Don’t forget to try a proper tortilla española. Every region has its own specialties, so let your itinerary guide your appetite.

A Part of Spain For Every Personality

Spain’s regions each have a distinct personality. Use this quick guide to match your vibe to the right destination:

  • For art and architecture lovers: Catalonia (Barcelona). Gaudí, world-class museums, and a creative energy that runs through every neighborhood.
  • For foodies: Basque Country (San Sebastián). Pintxos bars, Michelin stars, and the best culinary scene in Spain arguably in Europe.

  • For a winter escape: Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote). Year-round warmth, volcanic landscapes, and a pace that invites you to slow down and recharge.
  • For history buffs: Castile (Madrid, Toledo, Segovia). Royal palaces, medieval towns, and the Prado the cultural heart of Spain.
