New York City Girls Trip

There’s an undeniable allure that follows New York. The city that never sleeps is home to legendary artists, a cultural hub for a diverse range of communities, and an overall forward-moving environment that has inspired legendary movements in:

  • Artistic
  • Financial
  • Sports history

Whatever interests or hobbies you’ve gathered thus far on your journey, there are plenty of things to do in NYC and something we can all learn from a visit to the Big Apple.

If you and your girls are considering a New York girl’s trip, I can personally attest that this is a vacation worth taking. No matter the time of year, the city is buzzing with energy at all hours and there are always things to do in NYC…

Where to Stay in New York City

Before diving into activities, let's talk logistics because where you stay will shape the entire feel of your New York Girls trip.

Midtown is the most centrally located option and ideal for first-timers. You'll be walking distance from Times Square, Bryant Park, and easy subway access to basically everywhere. It's also where you'll find the widest range of hotels at different price points.

The West Village and Chelsea are also top picks if your group wants a more residential, romantic vibe. Think cobblestone streets, boutique hotels, quaint wine bars, and that classic NYC brownstone aesthetic you've seen in every rom-com. Staying here puts you close to the High Line, Chelsea Market, and some of the best brunch spots in the city.

The East Village is great for groups who want to be in the mix of nightlife and restaurants without paying Midtown prices, as it's eclectic, walkable, and full of personality.

The Upper West Side offers a quieter, more neighborhood feel, which is close to Central Park and ideal if your group leans more toward museums and leisurely mornings than late-night bar hopping.

Pro tip: Book accommodations at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance for weekend trips, especially during fall and spring when demand is highest.

NYC Girls’ Trip Ideas

1. Boozy Brunch

The only thing that can make brunch any better is a boozy brunch shared with your closest gal pals. Thankfully, New York’s got plenty of options to choose from. If your group is interested in day drinking in New York, it only makes sense to start the party with your first meal of the day. Tour companies offer a variety of walking bar crawls that you and the ladies can follow along with, if you’d prefer to leave the planning to the professionals.

After all, you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning…

2. Visit Times Square at Night

When visiting the city that never sleeps, you just have to set some time aside to visit Times Square after the sun sets. See how the city comes to life under bright neon billboard signs encircled by whizzing car lights. One of the most notable and visited sightseeing locations in New York, there’s electricity coursing through the crowds that can’t be compared to anywhere else on Earth.

3. Drinks and Apps at Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is tucked away on a street corner in the heart of the Meatpacking District. In the two-story 40,500 sq foot marketplace, you can find:

  • Small food stands
  • Bars
  • Sit-down restaurants
  • A variety of artisan markets
  • Artists selling unique trinkets and treats

If you time out your stop here around happy hour, you can catch some deals at different restaurants to make the most of the visit and hop around trying bits from different spots throughout the market.

4. Visit Little Island

One of the newer additions to New York is the Little Island, an entirely man-made floating park. A short walk from the 14th Street and 8th Avenue subway stop, it’s one of our favorite free things to do in NYC on a sunny day. It can get a little busier on weekends and for events, so just make sure to do your research before heading over. If you work up an appetite after all the walking, Chelsea Market is just a quick walk down the street!

5. Walk the High Line

Another one of the top things to do for a girls trip to New York is to walk along the High Line. This landmark is a walkable greenway above the Meatpacking District that was formerly a track for freight trains delivering food to Manhattan. The coolest part is seeing bits of the train tracks that are left from the original line built in the mid-1800s.

6. See a Broadway Show

You don’t have to be a theater kid to enjoy the experience of a Broadway show. See where the greats like Ariana Grande, Viola Davis, and Morgan Freeman began their legendary show business careers. A few shows to consider for a night with a bit of (good) drama are:

  • The Lion King
  • Hamilton
  • Westside Story
  • Hadestown

7. Central Park

Take a walk through Central Park for a cinematic moment with your ladies. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, whether you decide to:

  • Reserve an Insta-worthy picnic
  • Go for a paddle boat ride
  • Catch a concert in the park

8. Comedy Club

Looking for things to do in NYC at night? For a more low-key night on the town with lots of laughs, grab your girls and head out to a comedy club. There are a few free comedy clubs scattered throughout the city, but prices are relatively affordable for this nighttime activity. Acts vary from local up-and-coming stand-up comedians to world-famous performers so you’re able to choose the kind of night you want to have.

9. Bridges

Did you know that there are over 27 major bridges in New York? Connecting in multiple points of the city they’re a distinguishing trait that are part of what gives this East Coast destination its character. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, drive along the Manhattan Bridge, or bike across The Williamsburg Bridge.

10. Check out the Museums

Depending on when you and your girl group plan your trip, you may want to have a few indoor things to do in NYC on your itinerary. Thankfully, there’s a plethora of museums to choose from that are waiting to be explored. We’d definitely suggest looking into museum schedules to figure out which locations offer free admission on different days of the week.

Here are a few popular options to help get you started:

  • The Met
  • The Museum of Modern Art
  • Brooklyn Museum
  • Museum of Natural History

11. Catch Some Views at An Observation Deck

While you might not need to get a bird’s eye view of the city to enjoy it, I’d highly suggest investing a bit of time and energy in finding an observation deck for a jaw-dropping perspective of New York. After visiting Summit ONE Vanderbilt during a recent girls’ trip myself, I can honestly say it’s worth the money and will make for a memorable moment and photo op.

12. Street Food

If you’ve also been sucked into Netflix’s new Street Food series, I’m sure you’re well aware that New York City is one of the best places to visit for street eats. A simple (and tasty) way to connect with the local culture is by checking out and supporting local vendors.

Whichever borough you’re in, you’ll be sure to find:

  • A bodega with a decent chopped cheese
  • A deli with quality bagels
  • A food cart with legendary slices of ‘za or hot dogs

13. Rooftop Bar

There’s nothing quite like summer in New York; thanks to Ms. Carrie Bradshaw and her girls, it’s safe to say I’m guilty of also romanticizing the experience myself. If your girl's trip to New York just so happens to land during the warmer months, a visit to at least one of the rooftop bars in New York is a must. Catch a peachy sunset overlooking the East River from the heights of the Panorama Room on Roosevelt Island.

14. Get Dolled Up for Dinner & Drinks

To commemorate a successful girl’s trip that made it out of the group chat, treat yourselves to a special dining experience that’s unique to New York. This destination is arguably the #1 foodie city in the world, thanks to the eclectic gastronomical offerings and price ranges that can be accommodated for.

Do you and your girls drool over fresh fish and sushi? Consider planning a night at Studio 151 for some jazz, hand-crafted sushi, and cocktails. Or if you’re feeling in the mood for Mediterranean food, Cafe Mogador in Brooklyn comes highly recommended for its calm interior and flavorful menu items. No matter what you’re craving, we can guarantee there will be somewhere ready to satisfy and celebrate the occasion.

15. Attend a Live Talk Show Taping

One of the most uniquely New York experiences that most visitors don't think to plan is attending a live taping of a late night or daytime talk show. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert all film in New York City and offer free audience tickets that you can request in advance. It is a genuinely fun and memorable experience, and tickets are completely free. Just be sure to request them well ahead of your trip as spots fill up quickly.

16. Take a Class Together

New York is packed with studios offering hands-on creative experiences that make for fantastic group activities. A pottery class is one of the most popular options right now, offering a mix of creativity, laughter, and a souvenir you actually made yourself. If your group wants something more sensory, a perfume-making workshop lets you work with a fragrance expert to blend and bottle your own custom scent to take home. Both types of experiences are bookable through platforms like Airbnb Experience are available across multiple neighborhoods.

17. Sunset Boat Cruise

For a truly special evening on the water, book a sunset boat cruise around Manhattan. Charter options range from intimate sailboats to larger party vessels, and the views of the skyline from the water at golden hour are unlike anything you will experience on land.

Many cruises include a BYO option so you can bring champagne and snacks for the group. It is one of the most romantic and visually stunning ways to celebrate a girls' trip, and the photos will speak for themselves.

18. Explore Brooklyn's Flea Markets and Vintage Shops

Brooklyn is home to some of the best flea markets and vintage shopping in the entire country. The Brooklyn Flea operates seasonally and features hundreds of vendors selling antiques, vintage clothing, jewelry, art, and food in a lively outdoor setting.

Smorgasburg, which runs alongside it in warmer months, is a food market with dozens of local vendors and is widely considered one of the best food experiences in New York. Spending a morning browsing Brooklyn's markets and vintage shops before grabbing lunch at a local cafe is a perfect low-key addition to any itinerary.

Planning Tips for Your NYC Girls' Trip

When to Go

New York is worth visiting any time of year, but fall (September through November) is arguably the best season. This is due to mild temperatures, spectacular foliage in Central Park, and the city feels alive in a particular way. Spring is a close second. Summer is hot and humid but packed with outdoor events, rooftop bars in full swing, and free concerts. Winter is cold but magical during the holiday season, with the Rockefeller Center tree, ice skating rinks, and holiday markets at Bryant Park.

How Long to Stay

A long weekend (3–4 days) is enough to hit the major highlights, but 5–6 days gives your group room to breathe, explore neighborhoods at a slower pace, and not feel like you're constantly rushing. If this is a first visit for most of the group, plan for at least 4 full days.

Getting Around

The subway is your best friend. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard is worth it if you're using it more than twice a day. Taxis and rideshares are easy but can get expensive, especially during peak hours. Walking is genuinely the best way to experience many neighborhoods. Ensure that you budget more time than you think you'll need to get places because you'll inevitably stop to explore something along the way.

Making Reservations

This cannot be overstated. For popular restaurants, observation decks, and Broadway shows, book ahead of time!. For venues like Summit ONE Vanderbilt and the Comedy Cellar, book weeks in advance for weekend trips, and even longer during busy seasons.

Budgeting

New York can be done on a budget or it can be a splurge, just depending on what you’re looking for. Budget for at least $75–100 per person per day for food and drinks if you're mixing nicer dinners with street food and happy hour deals. Transportation is relatively affordable via subway. Shopping, shows, and observation decks are where costs escalate quickly, so prioritize ahead of time.

What to Pack

Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Plan on 8–15 miles of walking per day if you're actively exploring. Layers for unpredictable weather (especially in spring and fall). A compact crossbody bag for navigating crowds. And one dress-up outfit for that special dinner or show, as New York rewards those who make an effort.

New York City Girls Trip Common Questions

How many days do you need for an NYC girls' trip?

A long weekend of 3 to 4 days is enough to cover the major highlights, especially if your group plans efficiently and groups activities by neighbourhood to minimise travel time. If it is a first-time visit for most of your group, 4 full days is the sweet spot. Five to six days gives you room to slow down, explore more deeply, and include a day in Brooklyn without feeling rushed.

What is the best time of year to visit New York City with friends?

Fall (September through November) is widely considered the best season for a New York City girls' trip. Temperatures are mild and comfortable for walking, Central Park is at its most beautiful with autumn foliage, and the city has a particular energy during this time of year. Spring (April through June) is a close second.

Summers are usually hot and humid but brings rooftop bars, outdoor concerts, and free events in Central Park. Winter is cold but magical around the holidays, with the Rockefeller Center tree, Bryant Park Winter Village, and ice skating at multiple rinks across the city.

What neighborhood should we stay in for a girls' trip to NYC?

It depends on your group.. Midtown is the best choice for first-timers and groups who want to be centrally located with easy subway access everywhere. The West Village and Chelsea offer a more romantic, boutique feel that many women prefer for a girls' trip specifically.

The East Village is great for groups who prioritize nightlife and restaurants at more accessible price points. The Upper West Side suits groups who want a quieter, more residential feel close to Central Park and the major Uptown museums.

How do we get around New York City?

The subway is the most efficient and affordable way to get around the city. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard is worth buying if your group plans to use it more than twice a day. Walking is also genuinely one of the best ways to experience New York, particularly within neighborhoods like the West Village, SoHo, and the Meatpacking District where points of interest are close together. Taxis and rideshares work well for getting back to your hotel late at night but can be expensive during peak hours and surge periods.

How much does an NYC girls' trip cost?

The range for an NYC girls trip depends on how your group likes to travel. A budget-friendly long weekend can come in at around $300 to $400 per person sharing an Airbnb and making smart choices on food and activities.

A mid-range trip staying at a decent hotel, doing one Broadway show, and mixing nice dinners with casual meals typically runs $500 to $800 per person. A more luxurious trip with high-end hotels and fine dining can go much higher. The best approach is to identify your must-splurge items (a Broadway show, one fancy dinner, an observation deck) and save money on the things that matter less to your group.

What should we wear on an NYC girls' trip?

Comfortable walking shoes are genuinely the most important thing you can pack. Plan on walking 8 to 15 miles per day if you don't have comfortable shoes, and blisters will derail a trip fast. Beyond that, New York is a city where people dress up more than most US cities, particularly for dinner and evenings out. Pack at least one outfit you feel great in for a special dinner or Broadway show. Layers are important year-round as temperatures can shift considerably throughout a single day, especially in spring and fall.

Is New York City safe for a girls' trip?

New York City is one of the most visited cities in the world and is generally very safe for groups of women traveling together. As with any major city, normal common-sense precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings late at night, keep belongings secure in crowded areas, and use a crossbody bag rather than a tote in busy spots like Times Square and the subway. The neighbourhoods most popular with girls' trip visitors, including the West Village, SoHo, Midtown, and Brooklyn, are all well-trafficked and feel very safe at virtually all hours.

What are the best free things to do on a NYC girls' trip?

New York has a remarkable amount of genuinely great free experiences.

  • The Brooklyn Bridge walk
  • the High Line
  • Little Island
  • Central Park (including Bethesda Terrace and Strawberry Fields)
  • wandering the West Village and SoHo
  • visiting the 9/11 Memorial reflecting pools
  • watching the sun set from Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • simply exploring neighborhood streets

The Staten Island Ferry also offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty at no cost.

Do we need to book everything in advance for an NYC girls' trip?

For popular restaurants, yes. Spots like Buvette, Clinton St. Baking Co., and most well-known brunch and dinner destinations book out days or weeks in advance, especially on weekends. Broadway shows and observation decks like Summit ONE Vanderbilt should also be booked ahead. Talk show tapings require advance requests, sometimes months before your trip. For activities like the Brooklyn Bridge walk, the High Line, Central Park, and neighborhood wandering, no booking is needed at all. The key is to identify your non-negotiables early and secure those, then leave room for spontaneity with everything else.
