Ready for a trip where you can zip-line through a cloud forest in the morning, spot sloths in the afternoon, and relax on a Pacific beach by sunset?
Costa Rica packs an incredible amount of adventure into one of the world’s smallest (and most welcoming!) countries.
But even a country this small has plenty to offer, and planning the perfect trip can often feel just a bit overwhelming.
That’s why we’ve built your ultimate Costa Rica travel guide! Read on to learn more about the best rainforests, wildlife experiences, beaches, and adventure tours to help you plan a celebration trip that’s anything but ordinary!
Why is Costa Rica Perfect for a Celebration Trip?
You can celebrate in almost any corner of the country. Yet people keep telling us that Costa Rica has stolen a piece of their hearts, and for good reason.
Here’s what makes Costa Rica stand out from the crowd:
- Unmatched biodiversity: Did you know that Costa Rica makes up just 0.03% of Earth’s land mass but contains over 5% of the world’s total biodiversity? That includes over a thousand bird species within an incredible 500,000 animal species overall.
- Adventure at every turn: Costa Rica was made for adventure. You’ll find zip-lining, white water rafting, volcano hikes, hanging bridges, surfing, and snorkeling all within easy reach.
- Stunning beaches on two coasts: The country sits at the intersection of the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and each offers a completely different beach experience, from surf breaks to calm turquoise bays.
- Eco-tourism leadership: With 28.4% of the country’s land protected in national parks and reserves, one of the highest ratios in the world, Costa Rica takes sustainability seriously.
When Is The Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?
Costa Rica’s temperatures are remarkably consistent year-round, which is part of the appeal of this destination. The biggest determining factors? The seasonal rain and crowd levels.
- Dry season (December–April): The best weather, the warmest days, and the least rain. This is peak tourist season, so prices are 20–30% higher than green season and popular spots book up fast.
- Green season shoulder (May–June, November): Shoulder season brings much fewer crowds. Plus, you’ll see the Costa Rican landscapes at their best, and noticeably lower prices. Rain tends to fall in short afternoon bursts, leaving mornings clear for exploration.
- Turtle nesting season (July–October): Costa Rica is special in that it has its own turtle nesting season. This should be on your bucket list as Tortuguero is the premier destination for the experience.
- Whale watching (mid-July–October, December–March): Humpback whales visit Costa Rica’s Pacific coast twice a year, and Marino Ballena National Park is one of the best spots in the world to see them.
When planning your Costa Rica adventure, you may want to avoid September and October if possible, as these are the heaviest rainfall months, and some rural roads can become impassable. May and November offer the best green season value with manageable weather.
Costa Rica Rainforest & Wildlife Experiences
Costa Rica’s 26 national parks and numerous wildlife refuges protect some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Here are the highlights that belong on your itinerary:

Monteverde Cloud Forest
Monteverde is magical in the truest sense. Imagine walking through the cloud forest’s hanging bridges surrounded by mist, orchids. If you’re lucky, you may even spot the elusive resplendent quetzal.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest is also one of Costa Rica’s top zip-lining destinations, with canopy tours that send you soaring above the treetops.
Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna
The Arenal area is Costa Rica’s adventure hub. There’s tons to do and see in this area:
- Hike to La Fortuna Waterfall
- Cross hanging bridges with views of the volcano
- Zip-line through the forest canopy
- Soak in natural hot springs heated by volcanic activity
It’s an incredible mix of adrenaline and relaxation that works beautifully for honeymoons and group trips alike. Want a few more honeymoon-specific ideas? Check out our best Costa Rica honeymoon tips!
Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica’s most visited parks. You’ll enjoy white sand beaches and lush rainforest trails, and everything in between. Keep an eye open in this area, and you may be rewarded with capuchin monkeys, sloths, and iguanas.
Manuel Antonio National Park is compact enough to explore in a morning, leaving the afternoon free for beach time or a boat tour along the coast. National park entrance is $15–$20 per person.
Tortuguero & Corcovado
Tortuguero, accessible only by boat or small plane, is the place for sea turtle nesting (July–October). Evening turtle watching tours run about $30 per person, and full-day tours of the park and canals are around $80.
On the opposite coast, Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula was called “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by National Geographic. (Just watch out for jaguars, scarlet macaws, and all four of Costa Rica’s monkey species!)
Where are the Best Beaches in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is home to two coastlines, and both offer very different beach experiences:

- Pacific Coast: Guanacaste’s beaches (Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, Playa Conchal) offer warm water, consistent sun, and great surf. The central Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Dominical) blends beach time with rainforest access.
- Caribbean Coast: Puerto Viejo and Cahuita bring a completely different vibe. You’ll find reggae rhythms and Afro-Caribbean culture, and plenty to explore including coral reefs for snorkeling.
- Marino Ballena National Park: Known for its whale’s-tail-shaped sandbar and humpback whale watching, Marino Ballena National Park drew over 143,000 visitors last year!
For a trip that blends romance and adventure, Costa Rica’s beaches are hard to beat. Our guide to planning a dream honeymoon in Costa Rica pairs the best beach destinations with unforgettable experiences.
What to Eat in Costa Rica
Costa Rican cuisine is fresh, simple, and deeply satisfying. The national dish is gallo pinto (rice and beans), served at breakfast with eggs, plantains, and fresh fruit.
For lunch and dinner, look for a casado which is a hearty plate with rice, beans, salad, plantains, and your choice of protein.
Don’t miss fresh ceviche, tropical fruit smoothies, and of course, Costa Rican coffee, some of the best in the world, grown right in the Central Valley highlands.
Traveling Sustainably in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a global leader in sustainable tourism. That means traveling responsibly here is easier than almost anywhere else. And you don’t have to sacrifice luxury experiences to stay responsible. A few key tips will help you leave the area better than you found it!
- Stay at certified eco-lodges: Look for the CST (Certification for Sustainable Tourism) seal. These properties meet strict environmental and community standards — and many of them are also the most beautiful and immersive places to stay, from treehouse lodges in Monteverde to jungle retreats near Arenal.
- Hire local guides: Local naturalist guides not only spot wildlife you’d walk right past, they also keep tourism dollars in the communities that protect these ecosystems. Guided nature walks are one of the best investments you’ll make on the trip.
- Eat at sodas: Family-run sodas serve fresh, locally sourced food. Supporting these small restaurants is one of the simplest ways to ensure tourism benefits local families.
- Respect wildlife: Never touch, feed, or chase animals. Keep a respectful distance, especially during turtle nesting season. Your guide will know the right viewing protocols.
- Skip single-use plastics: Bring a refillable water bottle, as tap water is safe to drink in most of Costa Rica. Many eco-lodges and tour operators have eliminated single-use plastics entirely.
